Oktoberfest Tampa Turns 6, Releases Dunkel

It is now one of Tampa Bay’s largest Oktoberfest events, but it hasn’t always been like that.  Oktoberfest Tampa recently celebrated its 6th annual event in 2015 at the city’s downtown Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park.

Each year, the German-themed festival of Gemütlichkeit, attracts thousands of visitors to enjoy the authentic food, drink, music and entertainment. The event hosts its own gaming competitions, titled as the Outrageous Bavarian Games. Free to play for everyone.  There is an opportunity to win cool swag and prizes for each game, and in 2015 there was a Grand Prize winner that beat out all other players for 2 Lufthansa airline tickets from Tampa International Airport to any of their destinations in Germany. Quite the prize!

The Lufthansa Grand Prize was not the only new feature for the event, there was also the release of its first-ever signature beer, the Oktoberfest Tampa Dunkel by Coppertail Brewing. The event is known for always having a variety of beers available on draught for it’s beer-loving audience.

There are three main beer styles that are often served during Oktoberfest in Germany, light, medium and dark. Light beer is usually a pilsner often shortened to “Pils,” medium is the fest category or “Märzen,” and the dark lagers are “Dunkel.”

The new beer release is a brand new addition to the festival that the event directors have said they plan to offer every year.

We also found Coppertail Brewing founder, Kent Bailey, and his brother enjoying a Maß in celebration to the fest and the new beer launch.

The beer was extreme limited supply. The next time it will be made available to the public will be at this year’s Oktoberfest Tampa event.

But there is not just the cool, local brew to get excited about. The Outrageous Bavarian Games are fun if you want to put your muscle to the test or get some solid people watching time in. Either way, the experience is a hoot! Goose Island and Tampa Bay Audi were major sponsors and it was fun to see people winning cool swag.

Stein Hoisting is, by far, the most popular competition during the Oktoberfest Tampa weekend.

But there is always some fierce Tug-O-War or jousting competitions to be found, too.

Everything boils down to great prizes and some serious bragging rights!

In between some good authentic Bavarian plates like schnitzel and sauerbraten, there is also traditional music, all weekend long.

The 7th Annual event is this fall,  October  7, 8, 9 – 2016 at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park.

Special firkin tappings happen daily and the Special Hoperations Homebrew Club also does daily brew day sessions.

The event also supports Are You Safe, a Tampa Bay non-profit.
